Futomaki
Futomaki

Futomaki is a type of sushi in the form of thick rolls. The word 'futo' in Japanese means 'thick', which perfectly reflects the appearance of the rolls. They are much larger than other types of sushi rolls, such as hosomaki or uramaki. Futomaki are several centimetres in diameter and are cut into thick slices that can easily be eaten with chopsticks or hands. Futomaki rolls are wrapped in a sheet of nori (dried marine algae) and the sushi rice sits between the nori and the filling. The rice is often sprinkled with sesame or other toppings, adding extra texture and flavour. The ingredients inside are varied, and can include seafood, fresh vegetables, various types of roe, tamago and tofu.
